Business website 2026: from showcase to marketing-injected site

You have a website that someone built for you with care a few years ago. The pages look good, the logo is in its place, the phone number sits at the top right. And yet requests come in through other roads: word of mouth, phone calls, a marketplace or two. If someone asks you what the site is for, you might answer "it's useful, but it's not what brings in customers".

In 2026 this situation weighs more, because search is changing shape. In this article I explain what has changed, with sources and dates, what I mean by a marketing-injected website, and what you should prepare before spending a single euro on a new site.

What has changed in the way customers find you

Today many searches get an answer written by artificial intelligence before the list of websites even appears. Google calls the AI-generated summaries that can appear in the results AI Overviews, and the deeper search, with follow-up questions and comparisons, AI Mode. According to Google's help page, AI Mode is available in Italy and in Italian. Alongside Google there is ChatGPT search, which chooses which sites to show in its answers.

The concrete risk: fewer clicks on traditional results

The most cited study comes from the Pew Research Center, reported by Search Engine Journal in September 2025: across 68,000 real searches, users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when there was none. Google disputes the methodology and maintains that clicks remain relatively stable and of better quality, without publishing comparison figures.

I have to tell you about a limit: most research on this topic concerns English-speaking markets, and the effects on Italy are largely unmeasured. I don't have an Italian figure and I won't make one up. What I can tell you is the direction: if the answer can be read on the results page, a site that isn't cited has fewer chances of being visited.

Italian companies are using AI more and more

ISTAT, the Italian national statistics institute, reports that among companies with at least 10 employees the use of artificial intelligence went from 8.2% in 2024 to 16.4% in 2025 (release of 15 December 2025). The figure concerns companies, not your customers, but it shows how fast things are changing.

Showcase website and marketing-injected website: the difference

A showcase website is an online brochure: it presents the company, lists the services, shows the contacts. A marketing-injected website is a site where positioning, SEO and GEO (optimization for being cited by AI answers), contact paths, tracking and content are designed together from the start, not added later by three different vendors.

MeasurementTotal visits, if anyHow many requests come in and from which page
ContentWritten onceUpdated and organized by topic

One example I can document is the Next Talent Academy blog: it started with no structure and no audience. I organized the content around two thematic pillars, mapped the keywords by search intent and monitored the data with Search Console. The result: this academy went from about 300 to almost 5,000 clicks a month. It is the case of an online academy, not a rule that applies to every sector, but it shows what changes when the structure is decided before writing.

The technical basics that matter in 2026

    Indexing and snippets

Google's guide to AI features (updated on 10 December 2025) says that to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, that is, a text excerpt in the results. No other special technical optimizations are needed, and Google points out that appearing is never guaranteed. The traffic coming from these features ends up in the Search Console Performance report, together with the rest of web search.

In plain terms: if a page is blocked, badly duplicated or not indexed, it does not exist for Google or for its AI answers.

    Structured data and AI bots

Structured data is code, usually in JSON-LD format, that tells search engines what a page represents (a company, a product, a question). Google uses it to understand content and entities, and it can make a page eligible for rich results. AI features do not require special markup, and structured data must always match the visible text.

For ChatGPT the matter is simpler. The OAI-SearchBot crawler is used to show sites in ChatGPT search results, and OpenAI recommends allowing it in the robots.txt file. Sites that block it do not appear in ChatGPT search answers, although they may remain as navigation links. GPTBot is something else: it concerns model training and is an independent setting.

    Speed and mobile

Google measures page experience with three indicators, the Core Web Vitals: main content loaded within 2.5 seconds, response to interactions within 200 milliseconds, layout stability with a maximum value of 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile of visits and separately for mobile and desktop. Ask whoever manages your site for the values measured on mobile: if they don't know them, that already tells you something.

My advice: open Search Console and check that the pages of your main services are indexed. If they are not, everything else comes second.

Accessibility: who is required and who is not

Precision matters here, because you often read that "all websites must be accessible from 28 June 2025". That is not the case. The European Accessibility Act, transposed in Italy by Legislative Decree 82/2022, applies from 28 June 2025 to specific products and services, including online shops, ticketing platforms and banking services. Service companies with fewer than 10 employees and a turnover below 2 million euros are excluded (source: Your Europe, the EU portal).

    • You run an e-commerce site selling to consumers and you exceed those thresholds: the obligation applies to you and the site needs to be checked.

    • You are a service micro-enterprise below those thresholds: the obligation does not apply to you, but a readable site that can be navigated by keyboard is still an advantage for every visitor.

    • You are in a grey area: check your position with your consultant or accountant before deciding. I don't give legal advice and I have not read the full text of the decree.

What to prepare before rebuilding your website

If I were in the shoes of a small business owner, before asking for a quote I would prepare three things, in this order, because everything else depends on them.

    • What you sell and what you want to sell more of: two or three priority services or products, with their margin. A website cannot push everything.

    • Which customers you want: the questions they ask you before buying. They are the titles of your pages, and they are also the questions AI answers look for sources on.

    • How you measure a contact: a phone call, a form, a message. If today you don't know how many requests come from the site, I would start there, before changing anything.

This is the work I describe on the page about how I work on marketing-injected websites.

When you don't need to rebuild the site

If your pages are indexed, the site is fast on mobile and requests are already coming in, it is often enough to rewrite the service pages and add tracking. A rebuild makes sense when the structure gets in the way. How can you tell? Try adding a service page and finding out where your requests come from. If you can't, the problem is the structure.

One last limit: no website is guaranteed to be cited by Google or ChatGPT. I can remove the causes that exclude you, but the citation remains their decision.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a showcase website still enough in 2026?

It is enough if customers already reach you by word of mouth and the site only confirms who you are. It is not enough if you want the site itself to bring in requests, because search shows more and more answers directly in the results, and a site without pages built on customers' questions has fewer chances of being cited.

    What does marketing-injected website mean?

It is a site where positioning, SEO and GEO, contact paths, tracking and content are designed together from the start. Every page has a measurable task, for example bringing in requests for a specific service.

Do I need to do anything special to appear in Google's AI answers?

According to Google's official guide, you need a page that is indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Structured data and special technical optimizations are not required, and appearing is not guaranteed. For ChatGPT, check that your robots.txt file allows OAI-SearchBot.

Does my website have to be accessible by law?

It depends on what you sell and to whom. The European obligation, in force since 28 June 2025, covers among others online shops aimed at consumers, with an exemption for service companies with fewer than 10 employees and under 2 million euros in turnover. Check your position before deciding.

Want to know whether your current website holds up in 2026 or needs rebuilding?

I look at indexing, speed, page structure and tracking, and I tell you what I would change first and what you can leave as it is. I answer you myself, with your case in front of me.
